Remember the fall of Winona Ryder?

It was big. Like a long, cascading tumble from the top of a waterfall, she bumped her way along rock after bouncy rock and sank through the waters below. She hit bottom when she was busted for shoplifting. After missing out on the part of Shakespeare in Love that went to her then-best-friend Gwyneth Paltrow (who, it was rumoured, stole the script out of her inseparable buddy Ryder's handbag and nicked the part out from under her, then went on to win an Oscar for it. I've always thought that hideous pink dress Paltrow wore to collect her Oscar must have been Ryder in karmic form ensuring that if Gwynnie was going to win, she was at least going to look awful doing it).

Ryder was THE iconic face of the '90s, with starring roles in so many life-changing, zeitgeist movies – Mermaids, Reality Bites, Beetlejuice, Heathers, Dracula, Edward Scissorhands – if you grew up in the '90s, these were all-time favourites.

She was engaged to Johnny Depp and then went out with Matt Damon just as he was starting out. All dreamy, teenage girl stuff. But after the monumental misjudge of Paltrow in 1999, it seemed Ryder could do no more right. She began to make mistakes.

So when she got busted thieving a bunch of designer (mostly Marc Jacobs) clothes from fancy department store Saks in 2001, she took a break from acting and slipped out of the public arena.

But look at Winona now. She's back. Looking absolutely flawless and starring as the face of the new Marc Jacobs beauty line. Yes, the very same label she stole over a decade ago. Jacobs is clever, isn't he? He loves a PR spin (and never fails to support anguished celebrities). Of course, it helps that she is devastatingly beautiful.
