what the fake Vape pose means

what the fake Vape pose means

Let us pause for a moment and say, in our best Miranda Priestly voice, hands are so last season. The oversize, long-sleeve trend led by Vetements and JW Anderson has seen hands ushered to the back of the classroom to secure the “line” of a top or a coat, while, at the SS17 shows, designer Thom Browne decided to cover the hands of his models in white butler gloves.

The wrist-grabbing epidemic on the red carpet has highlighted an issue: in a world where a selfie is the last word in personalised celebrity statement, surely our hands are redundant? But, just as the raptor-hands trend saw fingers and thumbs fall back into the frame, so the pose of fake vaping has taken off.

Look at Selena Gomez’s most-liked photo on Instagram – she is adopting a version of this pose. Her fingers are clutching a bottle of Coke, but equally they could be holding an invisible roll-up. The likes of Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid and Kylie Jenner have all taken on the pose, with Jenner saying that it was a habit that came from being insecure about her lips. “Even now I always post photos where my finger is always in front of my mouth … it’s a habit. I would always cover my lips,” she told Elle. But there’s something more to it than just lip phobia. The fingers close to the mouth pose suggests a self-aware sexuality, a Marilyn Monroe or a Birth of Venus quality that comes from the same well of flirtation as duck lips. It’s not that far from the classic digit-in-the-mouth pose, but also a lot more subtle.
