Why this Rockefeller got into the handbag business

Ariana Rockefeller looked no further than the dinner table when it came to collecting inspiration for her namesake fashion line.

“My family and my grandfather were very good friends with [famed socialite] Mrs. [Brooke] Astor, and she was the epitome of elegance and always had her white gloves on and was so beautifully dressed,” says the 33-year-old Rockefeller, sitting in the one-bedroom Upper East Side pied-à-terre she shares with her husband, health care entrepreneur Matthew Bucklin (they divvy their time among Wellington, Fla., where she competitively rides horses; Mount Desert Island, Maine; and NYC).

“I think seeing that era was very influential — just the attention to detail and structure and classic femininity.”

The white gloves may be out, but that timeless chicness is still very much present in Rockefeller’s world and designs.

Two weeks ago, the Columbia University grad and great-great-granddaughter of oil magnate John D. Rockefeller debuted her first-ever bag collection — replete with four styles ranging from an ostrich-stamped leather clutch to a ladylike satchel with a brass chain modeled off her horse Stuart’s bridle ($475-$850). The purses, designed to take you from the stable to a black-tie benefit, are sold on the heiress’ Web site and via pop-up shops, and can be seen slung from the arms of socialite pals such as Natalie Bloomingdale.

“I’ve been really lucky that I have a team around me [including former Reed Krakoff bag designer Bassam Ali] that supports my vision of, really, just the classics,” says Rockefeller, who launched a clothing line in 2011 (her first collection was inspired by Picasso’s painting “Femme et Chien Sous un Arbre,” which hung in her family’s Cambridge, Mass., home).

“It really is who I am, and I have never claimed to subscribe to trends, nor do I pursue them.”

Rockefeller, who has Anne Hathaway’s looks and Kate Middleton’s poise, credits her all-American, clean-cut style to her disciplined upbringing.

“My mother [Diana Rockefeller] was always very strict with me growing up,” says Rockefeller, outfitted in Vince black leather leggings and a white Equipment blouse. “I wasn’t allowed to wear anything too risqué or scandalous. She always told me to wear a one-piece bathing suit. It was chicer, more demure. Especially growing up at certain clubs that would only allow that, of course.

“And look — now it’s come full circle! It’s back on trend.”

Rockefeller allows herself a few fashion indulgences, however, like her favorite green Céline luggage tote and a pearl-encrusted purse, which belonged to her great-grandmother, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller.

“I take it out on very rare occasions, because it’s very delicate,” she says. “I think she got it custom made in Paris to match one of her gowns.”

Rockefeller’s turn as a fashion designer may come as a surprise to some, considering the press-free life she’s managed to carve out for herself despite her prominent surname — a feat, considering the bevy of Page Six mentions similarly privileged peers rack up.

“My whole family, by nature, we’ve been a very private, quiet family,” says Rockefeller, who adds she took a risk by starting her own business.

“There are probably people who think I should have gone into the oil business — that it would have been an easier transition,” she says with a laugh.

“But I’ve always wanted a brand. And if I’m going to do it, I better really just go for it.”
