FWSA celebrates Selena’s legacy on the runway

Fashion Week San Antonio celebrated its fifth year anniversary in style with the anticipated runway show “Selena: A Salute to an Icon” on Nov. 2.

Fans were lined up early outside of Studio 109 in downtown San Antonio eager to see what fashion styles Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla and designer David Melgar curated for the runway featuring apparel from Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters.

“Thank you so much for coming. It means a lot,” said Quintanilla minutes before the show, who donned an all-black outfit complete with a hat and booties.

The show began at 7:30 p.m. with a short video presentation of Selena’s music and fashion highlights. With the song “Amor Prohibido” playing loud in the background, the models began to walk the runway to applause and cheers.

The unveiled looks, inspired by the legendary singer’s signature style, ranged from contemporary, everyday looks, including signature Selena T-shirts accompanied by skirts, pants and overalls, to more glamourous looks. One model even wore a fitted dress with a cutout similar to Selena’s iconic purple jumpsuit she wore to what became her final concert at the Houston Astrodome.

In true Selena fashion, other looks included leather skirts and sequined tops, hats, boots – all rocking Selena’s signature red lipstick. However, it wasn’t all about the ladies’ fashion. A few men styles were also included in the show.

Overall, the runway was a true celebration of legendary entertainer and fashion icon, Selena.
