And this year, New York Fashion Week has taken on a decidedly Antipodean feel with a slew of Australian stars strutting their stuff on the catwalk.

Raven haired beauty Shanina Shaik, 26, turned more than a few heads when she walked for Philipp Plein this week.

Bedazzled in a structured leather jacket, the exotic star made all heads turn as she debuted a dramatic Rapunzel-length hairdo on the runway.

She also wore a pair of very short shorts and augmented her outfit with a black garter.

Bad boy of fashion Jordan Barrett's star rose further on Saturday, when he took out the Male Model of the Year gong at the Daily Front Row Awards.

Madeline Stuart, who has Down syndrome has also been kept busy during her time in the big Apple.

The Brisbane-based 20-year-old walked for the likes of such high profile designers as Dexter Simmons, Jessie Liu and Arzamendi Style.

Ex-pat transgender model Andreja Pejic, who now calls New York home, stunned when she walked in the Prabal Gurung show alongside the likes of Gigi Hadid and Taylor Hill.

Former Miss Universe Jesinta Franklin (née Campbell) will aslo rub shoulders with the global fashion elite as a VIP guest of luxury brand Coach, which Selena Gomez is currently the face of, theDaily Telegraph reported on Monday

Newcastle teenager Alenya FitzGerald, who won the last season of Australia's Next Top Model made her New York Fashion Week debut walking for Victoria Beckham on Sunday, as David Beckham and son Brooklyn watched from the front row.

The 18-year-old rising star also leant her modeling talents to shows for designers Jonathan Simkhai and Tadashi Shoji
