I'm Done

Sonqo's new single I´m Done starts off with a soulful groovy guitar riff that sucks the headphones in close to your head, and soon you find yourself speeding along a hot road in an emancipatory story of cutting the chains of expectations.

"I'm starting to get tired of the roles I see around me, which people take on without even realizing it. Definitions of adulthood’s compartments like smartness and maturity are imposed upon you alongside "do-this-and-that" -life instructions. I caught myself drifting into this role-playing recently, and decided that enough is enough,” says singer and lyricist Nippi, explaining the song's creative origins.

“The conflicting ideals of drive, unbound result-orientation and harmonious we-spirit in various communities create the illusion of a perfect heavenly highway. But that is in fact a race towards burn out. But what about joy, play and truly enjoying life's moments? And above all, ourselves?! There may be some hyperbole in the song, but these thoughts are based on real life and tragedies I've encountered," she says.

"The song became a real soundtrack of emancipation, which varies from self-consciously snappy guitar playing to heavier hammering,” guitarist-composer Kissa says about the song.

After the verse, the song begins to flow into a swinging chorus, where Nippi's self-confident declaration makes even the quietest guys step up from the back and take their hands out of pockets.

“There is this thing where someone is speaking from the ego’s self-proclaimed heights that poorly camouflage buried or broken dreams, considering it their right to give advice on how to change one's life into this living a someday-life and some perfect balance of everything. The intentions may be good, but this still amounts to a view of life as performing, attaining and obtaining. That sets aside the important things: our deepest dreams, the joy of living, and our freedom. Freedom, for example, to roll around in a mud pond, dress up as a peacock, or to be the rock star of your own life. Which would you choose?" asks Nippi at the end.

Musically, you may find references to plots already cleared by bands like Tool, and it would do us honor if you do. We are a band drawing on the vibes of the 90s, and think a touch of oriental melodies amid the guitar riffs never hurt anyone!
