Milan Fashion Week

As Milan fashion week draws to a close we reflect on the big fashion takeaways from the new jazzy jacket, Lauren Hutton's legendary catwalk moment and why being a bag lady now comes with style kudos...

1. A neckerchief offers instant chic-ification

There was never any doubt that the models at Tod's were going to look ultra-polished what with the brand's unfailingly sleek ready-to-wear offering and exquisite leather goods. But it was the addition of a just-jaunty-enough accessory which caught our eye- add to every outfit now for instant chicification.

2. Balloon sleeves are designers' brilliant solution for anyone nervous about their upper arms

Fashion is often accused of existing in a parallel reality where nothing but perfect bodies, great weather and chauffeur driven vehicles exist. But there are signs that some designers know how to play to their their clientele. Take Salvatore Ferragamo where designer Fulvio Rigoni based many of his designs around balloon sleeves; they look directional (but also super-pretty on this floral tea dress) yet cover a multitude of mornings when croissants won over tricep dips.

3. If you want to look jazzy, you'll need a majorette jacket

At DSquared2 and Dolce and Gabbana, we saw a highly decorative alternative to blazers as your thrown-on-and-feel-pulled-together jacket. Presenting The Majorett Jacket, all bells, whistles and decorative frogging detailling. Think 'I'm in the marching band.'

4. Say hello to the LWD

Even if you haven't identified it yet, the LWD (that's the Little White Dress) is probably a major part of your summer wardrobe already. At Diesel Black Gold there were plenty of gorgeously flippy ones on offer in combinations of cotton and sporty mesh. Bring on carefree summer days in LWDs.

5. Stripes-on-stripe is the new grown-up print combination

Etro was a feast of bohemian maximalism but amongst the jangles and beading was the ultimate new effortless look; stripe shirt on stripe trousers. Extra points for the louche, oversized fit and modernist silver pendant. If you wear one thing next spring, let it be this.

6. The new rules of bag-ladying

We all aspire to being the kind of woman who can go about her day with just the tiniest clutch to transport her pared-back list of possessions but what with make-up bags, notebooks, gym kits, the kitchen sink etc. the possibility is looking unlikely. Never fear though because uber-chic label Marni (styled by Vogue's Lucinda Chambers) showed models with not one, not two, but three huge bags- two of them handily belted around the waist. Hoarders rejoice!
