In her Golden Globes red carpet interview, Evan Rachel Wood has explained why you have not seen her in a gown this awards season.

The Westworld actress, who is nominated for her role in the Best Actress - Drama category for the show, told E! host Ryan Seacrest she was suiting up for the occasion to make sure young girls and women "knew [dresses] aren't a requirement".

"This is my third nomination," Wood said. "I've been to the Globes six times. I've worn a dress every time."

Wearing a custom-made suit by Joseph Altuzarra, Wood said she was not trying to "protest" dresses, but she wanted to send a message that it was okay to "just be yourself".

"I want to make sure that young girls and women know they aren't a requirement and that you don't have to wear one if you don't want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that."

She described this particular look as an homage to the late David Bowie, whose birthday was on January 8, the day of the ceremony.

"I said this year I'm going to [pay] homage to Marlene Dietrich and Victor/Victoria and David Bowie, because it's his birthday."

Wood wore a suit by the same designer to accept her Critics Choice award last month.

She was not the only woman suiting up at the Golden Globes.

Octavia Spencer, nominated for her role in Hidden Figures, also attended the event in a custom tux.

Speaking on the red carpet, she said that she hoped the film, which tells the story of African-American mathematician Katherine G Johnson, would inspire "future STEM girls".
