Demand for plus-size at Duke Clothing rockets

Demand for plus-size at Duke Clothing rockets

Duke Clothing said plus-size clothing now accounts for 50% of its orders, compared to just 10% three years ago.

“Its common knowledge that we are getting bigger as a nation, however I believe the demand has always been there, in the past bigger guys were just forced into wearing relatively basic clothing from a limited number of retailers,” said Rohan Bassi, director of Duke Clothing, which has offered plus-size clothing for 15 years.

“Whereas now they are being offered up-to-date fashions brands across a range of different retailers. We’ve seen huge increases from larger retailers like Asos and others are getting into plus-size and we’re opening up more accounts.”

Bassi said buyers are keen about plus size as it brings “a completely new customer to their door who probably couldn’t have bought anything in the store in the past - it’s a totally new revenue stream”.

It comes as more retailers are expanding their plus-size ranges, with the likes of Asos and Boohoo upping their offer. The plus-size market was estimated to be worth around £6.6bn in 2017, according to Pwc.

Duke Clothing has 1,000 accounts in the UK, with stockists including Asos, Boohoo, Slaters Menswear and Sports Direct. Its wholesale fashion shoes prices range from £4.50 for a T-shirt to £35 for a jacket.

The company was founded in 1985.
